The Roving Gents Take On The 2017 Screwball Rally

16 Aug 2017

UPDATE

Setting off tomorrow, 21st September, Messrs Matt Pimlott (Red-Tree) and Dave Percy (UDC) will by trimming themselves in tweed and channelling their inner country gents to compete in the 2017 Screwball Rally, a roving road trip following a closely guarded secret route, revealed day by day to deter dastardly deeds, inspired by the European Grand Tours of old.

Even before it rolls it’s wheels over the start line, their ageing V8 Range Rover (a.k.a. The ‘Tweed Steed’) has been providing challenges of it’s own, namely a mysterious fluid leak that has hinted at more mechanical fun and frolics to come in the demanding miles ahead. Nevermind, the new Sports Exhaust should drown out any worrying clunking sounds and the newly fitted bar in the back will provide tipples on tap to wash away their woes at the end of each day!

From 21st to 25th September 2017, Messrs Matt Pimlott (Red-Tree) and Dave Percy (UDC) will by trimming themselves in tweed and channelling their inner country gents to compete in the 2017 Screwball Rally, a roving road trip following a closely guarded secret route, revealed day by day to deter dastardly deeds, inspired by the European Grand Tours of old.

However, far from the effortless luxury of that bygone era, teams competing in the Screwball Rally must stay ‘in character’ and nurse a £750 ageing banger across Europe, to raise money for charities close to their hearts.

A DRIVE TO SUCCEEED IN TWEED
For tweed-trimmed Screwballers Matt and Dave, (a.k.a The Roving Gents), this means pushing their 200 horsepower ‘vintage’ V8 Range Rover (arguably one of Britain’s most unreliable vehicles and deliberately chosen to add to the fun) through an estimated 2000 gruelling miles, all the while taking on a range of thus far undisclosed distractionary challenges along the route!

200 HORSES, 2000 MILES, 2 GOOD CAUSES
Jumping in the Rover at Dover on their 5-day grand tour through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Switzerland and Italy, The Roving Gents will be raising money for the very deserving charities of Millie’s Trust and Acton Bridge Pre-School.

Millie’s Trust was created by the parents of Millie Thompson who tragically passed away in a choking incident in October 2012. “As parents of a child ourselves we believe that everyone should have access to First Aid Training no matter what their situation in life is. We aim to make First Aid training readily available for minimal costs and in as many places as possible.”
Joanne and Dan Thompson.

Millie’s Trust allow you to attend a First Aid course at the lowest possible cost. They provide FREE First Aid awareness courses if you are pregnant, have a child under the age of 12 months or are struggling to find the funds to attend. They want everyone to be able to learn the skills that not only may help you to save your child’s life but also your friend’s, parent’s or partner’s.

The Roving Gents are looking to help fund a brand new outdoor covered play area for Acton Bridge Pre-School, to enhance learning and play experiences for their children.  Complete with weather shelter, the new project will include multi-functional play apparatus of stairs, slides and poles, within a soft sand area, all surrounded by an exercise track.

To assist these fabulous charities in continuing their vital work, Matt and Dave are approaching companies and individuals who they have a close working and social relationship with in order to seek sponsorship. You can help in two ways:

YOUR BRAND ON THE TWEED STEED
Emblazon your company brand or special message on their Screwball steed with a custom vinyl graphic to your design, maximising your European exposure whilst making their vehicle look ‘the business’. Thanks to our initial sponsor, Wykes Graphics, vinyls will be provided to us free of charge so all donations go to the charitable cause. A minimum of £100 per graphic secures your spot but don’t let that hinder your philanthropic generosity if you’d like to give more!

For further information, please email Matt at Red-Tree or Dave at UDC.

DONATE TO SUPPORT THE V8
For those shy and retiring types that don’t want their marque to be made on the vehicle, we’d very much appreciate a donation to these great causes via our fundraising page. All monies spent to date in preparing the vehicle for the rally has come from their own personal pockets. The omens from the car’s license plate, displaying the figures ‘999’ and lettering that resembles ‘SOS’ are already at work!

The car was originally advertised on eBay for offers over £1000 but The Roving Gents persuaded the owner to reduce the asking price to support their charitable venture. In return, they promised not to scrutinize the car too much on collection and were made aware the air suspension would likely be an issue; and it was, just 2 miles later, making the trip back from Hull to Cheshire a very long and lumpy one! Needless to say, the vehicle now has all-new traditionally sprung suspension components fitted to allow it to survive the rally ahead.

CHOCKS AWAY!
Matt and Dave will be setting off in around 5 weeks time, so please make sure you sponsor or donate to show your support for their valiant efforts, as soon as you can! Huge thank-yous in advance.

Big thanks also go to initial sponsors Bridgewater Laminate Products for fitting out the bar in the back of the banger, as well as creative and digital agency Dzinr for helping us market and promote our jolly good deeds!
